Empowering Youth for Climate Action in Rural Thailand

On 5 July 2025, JALAN Civic Lab, led by our Executive Director, Matt Yutthaworakool, had the honour of facilitating the Environmental Training & Sustainability Campaign as part of the Bank of America Climate Action Bootcamp 2025, hosted in Khon Kaen, Thailand.
Organised by our partners at the JUMP! Foundation, the bootcamp was designed to empower young people to become local leaders in climate and environmental action. Through experiential learning and community-based problem solving, the programme brought together secondary school students from Khon Kaen and Kalasin provinces—many from rural and under-resourced areas.
Our training centred on three core modules:
Know What: Exploring environmental challenges at their roots, including the concepts of Zero Waste and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
Know Why: Analysing the causes and consequences of issues like waste mismanagement and carbon footprints.
Know How: Co-designing actionable solutions for local communities and participating in a simulated project pitch to develop leadership and advocacy skills.
To enhance learning, the sessions were infused with interactive components—green-themed games, gallery walks, and reflection spaces—that nurtured creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration across schools.
What stood out most was the remarkable passion, insight, and commitment of the participating students. Despite limited access to resources, their vision for sustainable change was bold and inspiring. Their energy reaffirmed our belief that investing in education and youth leadership is the strongest foundation for a just, sustainable future.
