JALAN Civic Lab at the TF-LKYSPP Next-Gen Leaders Programme in the Philippines

Quezon City, the Philippines

From May to July 2025, Matt Yutthaworakool, Executive Director of JALAN Civic Lab, was selected to participate in the 2nd TF-LKYSPP Southeast Asia Next-Gen Leaders Programme. This initiative, led by the Temasek Foundation and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, aims to create better understanding of regional foresight, collaboration, and next-generation leadership.

The programme brought together emerging changemakers from across Southeast Asia to explore futures thinking tools, regional trends, and collective visions for the future of governance, justice, and inclusion in the region.

Online Futures Thinking Workshop (27–29 May 2025)
The programme began with a virtual workshop facilitated by Dr. Jared Poon, where participants engaged in interactive sessions on systems thinking, causal layered analysis, and scenario planning. Matt contributed to rich dialogues with regional experts and peers, examining complex social drivers and imagining preferred futures grounded in justice, equity, and democratic resilience.

Regional Learning Journey to the Philippines (20–25 July 2025)
Although the in-person learning journey in Quezon City, the Philippines, was affected by a tropical typhoon, the sessions were reorganised and held virtually, where participants continued their futures-based work through workshops, team projects, and collaborative scenario-building exercises.

Matt joined fellow participants in deepening collective reflections on how civic leaders can navigate uncertainty, build anticipatory capacities, and translate insights into action. The programme concluded with a panel dialogue on “Next-Gen Leadership in Southeast Asia and Beyond,” spotlighting youth agency and the role of cross-border solidarity in shaping inclusive regional futures.

Through this experience, JALAN Civic Lab reaffirmed its commitment to futures literacy as a tool for empowerment and democratic transformation. As Southeast Asia stands at the crossroads of rapid change, programmes like TF-LKYSPP’s Next-Gen Leaders offer a powerful reminder: the futures we want begin with the courage to imagine them together.

If you are interested in future thinking on any topics related to civic, climate, digital, and data democracy, we would love to collaborate.
