JALAN Civic Lab’s Matt Yutthaworakool Co-Facilitated a Workshop on LGBTQI+ Movements and Civic Space in Thailand
Bangkok
Our Co-Founder and Executive Director, Matt Yutthaworakool, recently co-facilitated a research validation workshop on The Role of LGBTQI+ Movements in Shaping Civic Space in Thailand, organised by ODI Global as part of its ongoing research on LGBTQI+ movements and civic space in Thailand, on 7 June 2026.
As a member of the research team, Matt worked alongside Dr Evie Browne, Research Fellow at ODI Global, to facilitate discussions with a diverse group of LGBTQI+ activists, community leaders, researchers, donors, and policy practitioners. The workshop provided an opportunity to present the emerging research findings, validate key themes, and gather critical reflections from participants to strengthen the final report.
The workshop focused on:
Reviewing and validating the research findings;
Exchanging perspectives on the opportunities and challenges facing LGBTQI+ movements in Thailand;
Developing recommendations to strengthen civic space and democratic participation; and
Building collaboration among civil society organisations, researchers, donors, and policy actors.
Throughout the discussions, participants generously shared their experiences and expertise, offering valuable insights that challenged assumptions, enriched the analysis, and helped ensure that the research reflects the realities of those working to advance LGBTQI+ rights and civic space in Thailand. One of the recurring themes was the continued need to improve access to funding and support for grassroots organisations leading change within their communities.
JALAN Civic Lab extends sincere appreciation to Dr Evie Browne, all workshop participants, and the Global Philanthropy Project for providing us opportunities to be involved in this initiative.
The research report will be published in the coming months, and we look forward to sharing its findings once it is released.
