JALAN Civic Lab at LCOY Thailand 2025: Amplifying Youth Voices for Climate Justice
Bangkok, Thailand
On 13 September 2025, Matt Yutthaworakool, Executive Director of JALAN Civic Lab, joined the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Thailand hosted at UNICEF. The gathering brought together young people from Thailand’s Central and Western regions who shared their climate concerns, exchanged experiences, and co-created ideas for a more sustainable and just future.
The Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) is part of a global network of youth-led events feeding into the Conference of Youth (COY), which precedes the annual UN Climate Change Conference (COP). In Thailand, the LCOY serves as a unique platform for young people to connect their local realities to regional and global climate dialogues. By situating youth voices at the centre of decision-making, LCOY ensures that policies and actions reflect the urgency felt by the communities most affected.
At this year’s LCOY Thailand, participants raised pressing issues such as air pollution, extreme weather events, energy transition, and the impact of unsustainable development projects on their livelihoods. Interactive sessions and workshops enabled youth to not only voice challenges but also propose innovative, community-driven solutions.
Matt shared insights from JALAN Civic Lab’s ongoing work on climate justice, digital democracy, and participatory governance, emphasising that climate action cannot be effective without inclusive and meaningful youth engagement. He underlined the importance of equipping young people with the tools, networks, and confidence to shape decisions that affect their futures.
The participation of JALAN Civic Lab at LCOY Thailand reflects its broader mission: creating spaces for democratic futures where civic, climate, digital, and data justice intersect. By engaging in youth-centred events like LCOY, JALAN Civic Lab continues to bridge local perspectives with global climate advocacy, strengthening the collective movement for a more just and sustainable Southeast Asia.
