JALAN Civic Lab Highlights Youth-Led Climate Action at Bangkok Climate Action Week 2026
Bangkok, Thailand | 7 October 2026
JALAN Civic Lab participated in the regional dialogue “Regional Civil Society Climate Action and Youth Leadership: From Local Practices to Regional Collaboration,” organized by the China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO) as part of Bangkok Climate Action Week 2026.
Representing JALAN Civic Lab, Matt Yutthaworakool, Co-Founder and Executive Director, joined the event as a speaker, sharing insights on empowering young people to become active climate citizens through education, community engagement, and meaningful civic action.
From Classrooms to Communities: Empowering Climate Citizens
In his presentation, “Climate Citizens in Action: Empowering Youth from Classrooms to Communities,” Matt explored how climate education can move beyond raising awareness to creating opportunities for young people to take action on environmental and social challenges.
Drawing from his experiences as both a civic innovator and a General Education instructor at Bangkok University, he emphasized the importance of rethinking traditional educational approaches. Rather than positioning teachers solely as providers of knowledge, he advocated for their role as facilitators who create opportunities for students to investigate real-world challenges, develop solutions, and contribute to their communities.
Turning Climate Awareness into Civic Action
A central message of the presentation was that meaningful climate education must be relevant, participatory, and connected to everyday life.
Matt introduced the 5Cs framework — Current, Credible Sources, Context, Collaboration, and Campaign — as an approach to helping young people move from studying an issue to developing informed and collaborative responses.
He also emphasised four essential capacities for climate citizenship: questioning information, localizing global challenges, building practical solutions, and sharing ideas to inspire collective action.
These approaches reflect JALAN Civic Lab's broader commitment to fostering inclusive civic participation, strengthening community resilience, and empowering individuals to become agents of social and environmental change.
